Mixing Concrete On Site at Walker’s Point

In this How Do We Do It? video, we’re sharing a really effective and flexible option for concrete work: mixing concrete directly on site.

Mixing concrete on Walkers Point is part of CedarCoast’s “How Do We Do It?” series, showcasing real construction processes, site by site.

Hello again - Pat here from CedarCoast Homes.

I’m joined by Ryan, our Site Supervisor at CedarCoast, who walks us through how this system works and why it’s often a smart alternative to traditional ready-mix concrete trucks.

A Different Kind of Concrete Truck

At first glance, this truck looks a little different from the concrete trucks you typically see on the road - and that’s because it is. Instead of arriving with pre-mixed concrete, this truck carries all the raw materials separately.

Inside the truck are compartments for Portland cement, sand, aggregate, and water tanks at the front. This setup allows the concrete to be mixed fresh, right on site, as it’s needed.

Full Control of the Concrete Mix

One of the biggest advantages of on-site mixing is  control.

Because the concrete is mixed as we go, we can fine-tune the consistency depending on the application -  whether we need the mix a little wetter or a little firmer. This control happens in real time, directly from the truck’s control panel.

The system also shows how much stone, sand, and water are being used, as well as how much material remains on the truck. We can even adjust aggregate blends or add enhancements like fiber reinforcement for slabs or colour additives when required.

From Mixing Truck to Pump Truck

Once mixed, the concrete drops down through the truck into a hopper and is then transferred to the pump truck. From there, the pump sends the concrete down to the work area, where our crew is filling concrete forms efficiently and accurately.

This approach works especially well on Muskoka cottage sites,  where access, terrain, and timing all play an important role.

Reducing Waste on the Job Site

Another major benefit of on-site concrete mixing is waste reduction.

Because the concrete is mixed only as needed, there’s far less leftover material. Any unused raw materials remain in the truck and can be taken to the next job. With traditional ready-mix trucks, unused concrete often becomes waste - whether it’s needed or not.

This method helps us work more sustainably while keeping job sites cleaner and more efficient.
