Working with Natural Granite in a Muskoka Cottage Landscape
Working with the land is a key part of how we build cottages in Muskoka.
In this How Do We Do It? video, Ryan from CedarCoast Homes explains how a naturally occurring granite rock wall became a key design feature on this Muskoka cottage project.
Seeing Opportunity in the Land
Rather than treating the granite as a limitation, CedarCoast approached it as an opportunity. The goal was to understand the site and determine how the existing rock could be integrated into the landscape in a way that felt natural and intentional.
Creating a Private Outdoor Retreat
Drawing inspiration from the clients’ previous cottage - where they enjoyed a private patio away from the main lake views - CedarCoast designed a quiet retreat tucked into the back corner of the property.
This space provides privacy, shelter, and a strong connection to the exposed granite, creating a natural place to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
Letting the Land Lead the Design
The finished patio feels like it belongs exactly where it is. Framed by natural stone and granite, it highlights the character of the site while remaining functional and inviting.
This project is a clear example of how CedarCoast builds cottages in Muskoka - by working with the land, respecting existing features, and allowing the site itself to guide the final design.
