Timber Frame Homes from CedarCoast

Designed for great views and wide open spaces.

When Bert Bongers, partner of CedarCoast Timber Homes, saw this lakeside property for the first time, he asked the owners, “Which is your favourite view?”

Today, in what has been built as one of the finest examples of timber frame homes, their front door opens wide, with straight ahead, unobstructed views all across the family rooms, framing the owners’ original intent – their unique vision of the outdoors – displayed inside every day.

This is a family that loves the boating life. All the children’s treasured memories were spent on the water. The couple, one with construction experience, the other from the fashion world, came together to express their love of waterfront living, with large rooms for all to gather, wrapped in the warmth of wood. “We appreciate the quality of really great wood,” she says. ‘This Ontario life, in nature, epitomizes who we are as Canadians.”

With two kids, each with their new families, the owners decided to give each a wing with separate bedrooms and baths. In the centre, gigantic living spaces encourage everyone to join together, yet the flow of the home holds privacy for each. For sheer family functionality, this plan works.

The house shows exquisite personal taste. From the European tiled fireplace to the designer kitchen – that seems cozy for two yet comfortably expands to fit the entire extended family – the sense of style displays a thoroughly modern sensibility . The oversize windows were a sourcing project in themselves. We ended up having to do some patio door glass repair because their was a chip in the glass. With the desire for uncluttered simplicity top of mind, the owners found a glass supplier who could achieve the sheer size and necessary R factor, yet keep the edges clean.

“Bert is a really good listener” says the client. “What CedarCoast says they can do, they do.” But, say the homeowners, they don’t tell you what to do. They simply encourage the architecture to respond to the wishes of the people who will eventually live within it. In this way, the experience of designing and building the home and the excitement of shopping for personal details, becomes fun. CedarCoast, they say, welcomed each new idea. With a fresh start, not a preconfigured floorplan, the customer never feels that “each tweak costs you more.”

‘It’s this easy, family first design experience that is the heart of everything we do’, says Bert. When the purchasers see their vision unfold, they become happy clients, thrilled with the cooperative process. CedarCoast has no shortage of delighted homeowners eager to share their design and building stories.
