How do cedar houses stay warm?

We have 2 types of "cedar homes". The first type is built with a solid log wall construction. The log wall thickness can be 4", 6" or 8". No matter what the thickness, logs are great insulators, especially cedar due to its cell structure. Log homes hold and re-radiate heat and can also buffer dampness meaning that they tend to stabilize both the humidity and temperature very well. This is also true in hot climates where log homes will remain cooler than other types of homes.
The other type of home is one where the cedar is only the cladding. The structure of the home is Post & Beam and the walls are insulated conventional with batts of insulation. Here it is the insulation that provides the buffer and the cedar gives the home its beauty and its longevity.
